Is the position of manager for HUD housing for senior citizens and disabled a stressful job?

Written By: admin on September 21, 2009 One Comment

My aunt lives in a HUD facility and she has been complaining to me that her woman manager is often unfriendly & abusive with her & others. This manager has been at this job 5 years; she is in her forties; previously she sold real estate. Friends of mine & I have come up with the thought that there is a fantastic temptation for managers of such facilities to become abusive, because the people they deal with are not able to defend themselves: Many of the elderly people are frail, feeble, & some suffer from dementia. We have also concluded that this female manager must not be a person of strong character and that she is apparently lacking in mental strength. It is our conclusion that this is a very stressful job & that the management company that hires managers has the obligation to screen their applicants well, and that they should only hire those who have very balanced and strong personalities, since the temptation to abuse the elderly cannot be resisted by a weaker person.
What do you reckon?

I agree with you but this sounds like a classic case of nepotism; the fact that she was previously a realtor indicates that the management company gave the job to a friend or relative, not someone who is particularly qualified for the job. But, as long as she runs the complex in the black then that is excellent enough for the management company; her treatment of the complex dwellers is a moot point in their eyes unless it becomes a problem, and only you can make it become a problem. Your family, and the families of others, need to complain about the manager to HUD, not the management company who did the hiring. If nothing changes contact AARP, your local and state politicians and your local newspaper. When it comes to the elderly in helped living facilities or senior housing complexes, abuse is rampant and it is only when the family members place up enough of a stink is anything done about it.
